Rest of Week 12

Semana Santa is over :( But, these last 4 weeks (literally so short) will be good. Well, the rest of the week was just as good as the first half. My mom and I had a pretty solid time in Tamarindo. Every day at the beach was beautiful. Thank goodness my mom brought sunscreen.

The resort was all inclusive, so there was a great buffet for every meal. The omelet guy in the morning knew what he was doing haha. One night we got to go to the Sushi restaurant in the resort. It was ok, ngl. But, I got some banging miso soup. I had missed miso soup. The drinks at the resort were also delicious. I found that I really liked this one called Tornado.

We went shopping the second day. Tamarindo's shops are very touristy, but also very cute. Mom got a really nice necklace from a astrology-girl type shop. The woman in the shop was also friendly, and she appreciated that I was down to speak Spanish to her. After that we went to a bar where the slogan was 'suck my cocktails'. It made me laugh. Other than that we chilled on the beach.

There were a ton of different animals in the resort. Fat lizards, little geckos, really whacky (and bold) birds, and even raccoons! (fun fact, my favorite word in Spanish is the word for raccoon: mapache). Mom saw the absolute fattest lizard on a tree one morning. On the final afternoon, a big lizard grabbed someone's discarded roll and ran under mom's pool chair.

A quick aside, I also had to go to a meeting with Clemson administration. If y'all know what happened there, go sign the petition for CCR executive board to resign.

The final day in Tamarindo was definitely the best. I got to go to a surf lesson!! I went through the resort to a place called "Banana Surf Club". I was the only one signed up for the group lesson, so it ended up being a private lesson. Amazing. The instructor used to be a professional surfer, so he was very knowledgable. He spoke Spanglish during the lesson because I told him I'm a student, and I appreciated that a lot. But no, the lesson was wonderful. I hit a rock under the surf at one point and got the absolute fattest bruise on my thighs (seen below). By the end of it I was paddling by myself, sitting up on the board, and picking the waves I wanted to ride. Fransisco (my instructor) was impressed. It boosted by ego a lot haha. That night we headed into Tamarindo for dinner. We went to a lovely shrimp place. The shrimp tacos there were to die for.

The final morning, we headed out to Sarchí. It's a town in Costa Rica that's famous for it's ox cart art. Unfortunately, it was also Maundy Thursday, so basically everything was closed. But, we got to see the big central painted cart. It was gorgeous. There was also a big souvenir shop open, so for everyone who is getting a little gift, its from Sarchí most likely. There was only one good restaurant open there, and it had a delectable soap de Mariscos. It was my first time trying it. Definitely on the list of great Costa Rican foods.

After that we just headed to mom's final hotel :( On the way we stopped at this hut and bought Vino de Coyol. Which is a wine made from a certain palm fruit. I didn't like it, but mom said it was reminiscent of a wine cooler from the 80's. It was a chill final evening. On the way we There was an aggressively American bar next to the hotel that we headed to. Fun Fact: Costa Rican red ale is pretty good.

Mom headed out really really early the next morning. Her taxi to the airport was 4 am, yikes. It was sad to see her go, but I was so tired because of the early hour, it wasn't super emotional.

After that I chilled in the hotel until checkout. I met up with my friends at an airbnb that afternoon. Just as a little last hurrah of Semana Santa. Unfortunately again, everything was closed, because of Good Friday. We actually had to eat at subway and Pizza Hut because there was nothing open haha. (Pizza Hut here sucks worse than in the US). It wasn't all boring though. Jeff found a casino that was open. So we tried our luck at the slot machines. I wasn't the biggest fan, because I hate losing money. Jeff had a great night though. He won over $10. Which is big in Costa Rica.

Yesterday (Sunday). Was a wonderfully simple day. I did some yoga. (First time getting back into that). I forgot how much I liked it. I'll definitely be doing more of that. I also got to hang out in the park with Erin and Isaac. We got some ice cream (mine was a cute ice cream version of Olaf). We just reflected on how little time we have left, and how important it is we spend it together. Kinda sad, but also we still got time to chill. No worries. But yeah. The rest of the week was relaxing and interesting. Good Semana Santa.
